    Analysis of photovoltaic plants with battery energy storage systems (PV-BESS) for monthly constant power operation

    Photovoltaic generation is one of the key technologies in the production of electricity from renewable sources. However, the intermittent nature of solar radiation poses a challenge to effectively integrate this renewable resource into the electrical power system. The price reduction of battery storage systems in the coming years presents an opportunity for their practical combination with utility-scale photovoltaic plants. The integration of properly sized photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems (PV-BESS) for the delivery of constant power not only guarantees high energy availability, but also enables a possible increase in the number of PV installations and the PV penetration. A massive data analysis with long-term simulations is carried out and indicators of energy unavailability of the combined system are identified to assess the reliability of power production. The proposed indicators allow to determine the appropriate sizing of the battery energy storage system for a utility-scale photovoltaic plant in a planning stage, as well as suggest the recommended operating points made for each month through a set of graphs and indicators. The presence of an inflection zone has been observed, beyond which any increase in storage does not generate significant reductions in the unavailability of energy. This critical zone is considered the sweet spot for the size of the storage, beyond which it is not sensible to increase its size. Identifying the critical point is crucial to determining the optimal storage size. The system is capable of providing reliable supply of constant power in monthly periods while ensuring capacity credit levels above 95%, which increases the penetration of this renewable resource. Despite the fact that the study focuses exclusively on the analysis from an energy perspective, it is important to consider the constraints associated to real storage systems and limit their oversizing

    [EN] Previous literature on students’ decisions and choices regarding universities contains a large number of factors that influence these process. This research focuses on two of these factors and its aim is twofold. First, it is analyses how prospective students’ study areas impact on the relative importance of different university selection criteria. Second, it examines whether the environment of residence (i.e., the size of the municipality) leads to differences in these criteria. The results obtained from a sample of 605 prospective university students who live in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha allowed us to conclude that there were significant differences in most of the selection criteria according to the field of study and the size of the municipality (i.e., five and six out of nine criteria, respectively). Some practical implications for the design of segmentation strategies and communication campaigns in the context of higher education institutions are presented in this work.Retamosa, M.; Millán, Á.; García, JA.     Using group theory arguments and numerical simulations, we demonstrate the possibility of changing the vorticity or topological charge of an individual vortex by means of the action of a system possessing a discrete rotational symmetry of finite order. We establish on theoretical grounds a "transmutation pass rule'' determining the conditions for this phenomenon to occur and numerically analize it in the context of two-dimensional optical lattices or, equivalently, in that of Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Optimization of harvest date according to the volatile composition of Mediterranean aromatic herbs at different vegetative stages

    Most of the studies concerning the optimal harvest date of aromatic herbs have dealt with different parts of plant such as flowers, leaves, stems, roots and seeds, but none have evaluated the effect of different harvest date at different vegetative stages on shoots (leaves and stems). Therefore, the main objective was to investigate the effects of harvest date of two consecutive seasons on the volatile composition of shoots of 4 aromatic herbs (dill, parsley, coriander and mint) widely cultivated worldwide. The impact of harvest date during the evolution of vegetative part of four aromatic herbs (parsley, dill, coriander and mint) was investigated. Volatile compounds of shoots of the four herbs were identified by GC–MS. The main compounds were 1,3,8-p-menthatriene, betaphellandrene, myristicin and myrcene for parsley, alpha-phellandrene, dillether and beta-phellandrene for dill, decanal, E-2-dodecenal, 1-decanol and dodecanal for coriander, and carvone and limonene in case of mint. There was a significant effect of harvest date on the content of volatile compounds of the four species. The results showed that highest total concentration of volatiles and therefore the optimal harvest date of parsley was found 9 weeks after planting date with a total concentration of 2543 mg kg−1, for dill was 2619 mg kg−1 14 weeks after planting date, for coriander was 2191 mg kg−1 3 weeks after planting date, and 23329 mg kg−1 for mint 6 weeks after planting dat

    A simheuristic algorithm for time-dependent waste collection management with stochastic travel times

    A major operational task in city logistics is related to waste collection. Due to large problem sizes and numerous constraints, the optimization of real-life waste collection problems on a daily basis requires the use of metaheuristic solving frameworks to generate near-optimal collection routes in low computation times. This paper presents a simheuristic algorithm for the time-dependent waste collection problem with stochastic travel times. By combining Monte Carlo simulation with a biased randomized iterated local search metaheuristic, time-varying and stochastic travel speeds between different network nodes are accounted for. The algorithm is tested using real instances in a medium-sized city in Spain
